JVP accuses Edu. Authorities of charging

The JVP yesterday accused the Education authorities of illegally charging fees from students in government schools for entry to Advanced Level classes. They claimed that the amount was half of what was levied by private schools for the same purpose.

Electricity charges to fall after establishing Norochcholai Coal Power Plant in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka government said that the electricity charges in the country would be reduced after the establishment of Norochcholai Coal Power Plant. Speaking to the media at the occasion of signing the agreement to begin constructions of Phase II and III of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, Minister of Power and Energy W. D. J. Senaviratne said that the charges for generating power will certainly decrease with this project.

Strong winds damage houses in Sri Lanka

Nearly 150 houses were damaged due to a strong wind that blew across several villages at Siyambalanduwa in Monaragala District Sunday evening. The Disaster Management Center in Monaragala confirmed that a gusting wind blew across the villages for about five to six minutes with torrential rains at about 3:00 p.m. Madugama, Ruhunu Danawwa and Mahakalugolla were the most affected areas by this strong wing, Disaster Management Center said. However there were no injuries reported due to the disaster. The Disaster Management Center has already taken steps to provide relief items to the displaced persons.

Elephant Pass railway station to turn "Affection Port"

The Ministry of Education has decided to gift the Elephant Pass railway station to the northern as an 'Affection Port' with the contribution from all Sri Lankan students and teachers under the 'Uthuru Mithuru Yal Devi Train Concept'. The decision was arrived at by the ministry to inculcate the vital ingredient of patriotism in the minds of the student population in the country and thereby lead them towards the transformation of the theme of one country, one people.

Dengue-carrying mosquito killer from Cuba this week

Latest Health Ministry statistics show that the number of dengue cases had risen to over 12,300 with 152 deaths.

Sri Lanka will bring down mosquito-killing bacteria from Cuba this week to curb the dengue epidemic, the Health Ministry announced. According to director general of health services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage, two Cuban specialist doctors will also be arriving in the island to provide necessary advice. Discovered in 1982, BTI bacteria have proven to be a successful deterrent against the mosquito that carries dengue.

US issues Sri Lanka travel warning despite end of war

The US State Department has warned American citizens traveling to or living in Sri Lanka about the potential for continued instability, including possible terrorist attacks despite the end of the conflict. The warning has been issued in a new Travel Warning for Sri Lanka issued on Friday.

Pakistan cricket squad leave for Sri Lanka


The Pakistan cricket left for Sri Lanka on Saturday to play Test and one day series against Sri Lanka. Speaking to the media at the Lahore International Airport, team coach Intikhab Alam said the batsmen should perform well to get better results. Pakistan team will play three Test matches, five one-days and one Twenty20 match.
